2006 Dog Point Section 94 Sauvignon Blanc, Rating: 94 “The 2006 Section 94 Sauvignon Blanc is candidate for New Zealand’s best Sauvignon Blanc. Aged for 18 months in older French oak and named after a cartographic reference to a part of their vineyard, the aromatics demonstrate the complexity that Sauvignon Blanc can achieve in experienced hands: a complex mélange of gooseberry, beeswax and a touch of rose petals, the palate a perfect marriage of chalky minerality and subtle tropical fruits. It puts pay to “thrilling Sauvignon Blanc” being an oxymoron and should age up to 4- or 5- years. Since debuting with the 2002 vintage, ex-Cloudy Bay winemakers James Healy and Ivan Sutherland have been fashioning some of Marlborough’s finest wines under their label Dog Point and their 2006s were nothing less than exceptional.”
